The Margin of Victory PDF Print E-mail

The margin for victory between an Olympic Gold Medal and no medal at all is extremely small. During the 2004 Summer Olympic Games, the margin of victory was:
*  Men's 200 meter freestyle (swimming)      1.42 seconds
*  Women's 200 freestyle                           0.59 seconds
*  Men's 800 meter (running)                      0.71 seconds
*  Women’s 800 meter                               0.13 seconds
*  Men's long jump                                     28 centimeters
*  Women's long jump                                11 centimeters

Lessons:
1. Recognize the unique gifts you have been given.
2. Train and be prepared for every great opportunity.
3. Persevere. Never quit.
4. When you win, maintain humility in knowing that you may have won by only the smallest margin.
5. When you lose, know that you may have lost by only the smallest margins.  Don’t let that determine your self-worth.
6. Don't look back at your best efforts.
7. Respect the competition.

As a Tae Kwon Do school instructor, I am often asked what makes Tae Kwon Do different from other styles of martial arts.   This is a very important question and one that I wish more people thought of when considering training.  The average person assumes that it is all "karate" with perhaps slight differences.

As instructors, it is our responsibility to educate people.  Informed consumers will make smarter decisions that will often be in our favor as Tae Kwon Do school owners, but we need to help ourselves by pointing out to them that which is obvious to us as practitioners.
