Tae Kwon Do is particularly beneficial for children on the autistic spectrum. It provides a structured program for kids who love to run, jump, and play, but are less likely to do well with team-oriented sports where interpersonal skills are more central to success. Tae Kwon Do builds confidence and competence to help special needs children to feel good about themselves and to achieve their personal best. Our program fosters education and interaction with parents and other caregivers in a safe and encouraging environment providing benefits that every parent wants for their child:

  • Self-confidence
  • Self-control
  • Improved focus
  • Coordination
  • Social skills
  • Body control
  • Core strength
  • Self-defense
  • Fun

Autism is a broad spectrum and it is extremely important that instructors communicate with parents to understand the needs of the individual child.  Often times, people with Autism process information differently.  Autism is NOT a function of intelligence.  We must remember that even the non-verbal child may be absolutely brilliant.  Autism is a communication disorder.  It is the way they are wired.

Multi-step instructions that seem simple to us such as" "put your right leg back, raise it to your chest and kick out with the ball of your foot with a kiyop" may be way too much for a child with Autism to process.  We have to break it down with fewer words.

Tae Kwon Do meets every child where they are, and provides an opportunity for even the non-verbal child to find his or her voice.  Follow "In the Dojang" for a series of articles written by experts in the Autism field, designed to help us as instructors to service the 1 in 110 people with Autism that will enter our schools.

See you "In the Dojang."
